Sercos Multi-Vendor Interoperability Demos

Sercos N.A. has created two multi-vendor interoperability demos, as shown below at the 2016 Industrial Automation North America Show in Chicago.

Both demos illustrate how Sercos® blended infrastructure enables Sercos, EtherNet/IP, TCP/IP and CIP Safety messages to be transmitted over a single Ethernet cable connected to products from multiple vendors. Neither additional hardware nor tunneling of the protocols is required for that purpose.

Multi-vendor interoperability demo #1 (right) includes 17 automation products from 10 different manufacturers, all running interoperably. Products include a PLC control system with HMI, a machine control panel, a safety logic controller, a servo drive, pneumatic valve terminals, a hydraulic controller, a positioning system, multiple I/O modules, a modular temperature controller, a load cell transmitter, a multi-turn encoder module, a gateway for connection of absolute encoders from any vendor, and a gateway for transmission of standard TCP/IP telegrams in parallel with Sercos. Manufacturers represented include: Aventics, Bosch Rexroth, Cannon-Automata, Feller Engineering, Festo, halstrup-walcher, Hilscher, Phoenix Contact, Rice Lake and TR-Electronic.

User interaction is encouraged. A user can rotate the encoders, perform safe motion while the light curtain is broken, push on a load cell for readout, command the actuator. Real-time redundancy can be shown by disrupting and restoring one Sercos connection at a time. The system detects the interruption within one cycle, indicates the point of interruption on the screen, switches to line mode and continues operating. After the Ethernet cable is reconnected, the network heals itself into redundant ring mode within one cycle while all functions continue working.

Multi-vendor interoperability demo #2 (left) includes 23 Sercos products from 11 manufacturers, all running interoperably. Products include a motion/logic controller and HMI, a machine control panel, a hand-held HMI controller, a servo drive, a stepper motor controller, a hydraulic controller, a pneumatic valve terminal, a frequency converter, safety logic systems, multiple I/O modules, a linear measurement system, a gateway for connection of absolute encoders from any vendor, a gateway for transmission of standard TCP/IP telegrams in parallel with Sercos, a Fieldbus-Fieldbus/Ethernet bus-Ethernet bus gateway, Sercos/Ethercat bridges, an AS-i gateway module, and a rotary coupler.

Manufacturers represented include: Bihl+Wiedemann, Bosch Rexroth, Cannon-Automata, Festo, Hilscher, Pilz, Phoenix Contact, TR-Electronic, Schleicher, Smitec, and Wago.

User interaction is encouraged. A user can move the linear encoders, perform safe motion while the light curtain is broken, operate multiple safety systems, move the capacitive Ethernet coupler, command the VFD and stepper motors, explore gateways/bridges to other Ethernet networks and more. Real-time redundancy can be shown by disrupting and restoring one Sercos connection at a time. The system detects the interruption within one cycle, indicates the point of interruption on the screen, switches to line mode and continues operating.
